Biography

Dr. Xiaojia Bai is an associate professor of the college of Food Engineering and Biotechnology, Tianjin University of Science and Technology. She completed Bachelor and Master Degrees from Tianjin University of Science and Technology at 1997 and 2000 respectively, and joined this university since 2000, as lecture and associate professor, respectively.  Dr. Bai received her doctoral degree from Tianjin University at 2010. She have published over 30 scientific papers.

Research Interests

Development of functional probiotic is important in food micro-organisms research. Cholesterol-lowering effect of lactobacillus by cholesterol assimilation has attract people's attention gradually, but the molecular mechanisms remain unclear, which limits the development and application of strain. Our research group focus on isolation of strain of functional lactobacillus, which can significantly reduce cholesterol content in the medium, and significantly change content of unsaturated fatty acids in cell. Cholesterol-lowering effect of this kind of strains affected by the degree of cholesterol stress in the medium. This research area include construction of transposon mutant library by using transposition complex integrated into the genome of certain strain. After phenotype screening selection, mutants will be obtained which can significantly change the cholesterol-assimilating function of bacillus. Using chromosome walking techniques, get both flanking DNA sequence of the transposon insertion sites in the genome of mutant. Construct gene knockout strain and complete genetic complementation test, thus validate function of gene. Identify regulation of key gene transcription in response to cholesterol stress. The work of our group will preliminary clarify the molecular mechanism of cholesterol-lowering effect of lactobacillus.
